The Municipality of Baggao faces challenges from typhoon-related issues, leading to floods, landslides, and riverbank erosion. In response, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) initiated the “llog Ko, Pasisiglahin Ko Project,” focusing on creek rehabilitation through bamboo planting to prevent landslides. The shortage of bamboo propagules prompted the establishment of an MDRRM Bamboo Nursery to address this challenge.
Renamed as “HaBAMBOOhay,” the project continues creek cleaning and mass bamboo propagation to mitigate landslides and soil erosion. Objectives include ensuring a sustainable bamboo supply, reducing the impact of natural disasters, curbing reliance on natural forests, and addressing greenhouse gas emissions. The MDRRM Bamboo Nursery, managed by a dedicated team, involves tasks such as weeding, processing, propagation, and maintenance.
The project benefits residents in landslide and flood-prone areas, along creeks and riverbanks. Collaboration with stakeholders like the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office, barangay officials, schools, NGOs, and CSOs is crucial for success. Recognized as a best practice, the project’s multi-faceted approach addresses various issues, particularly in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) mitigation and prevention, while establishing a sustainable planting source.
